Description

Engraved map with rump-lines and 8 wind directions added as manuscript: “Levant and Ponente; Tramontane and Ostro; Mistral and Sirocco; Gregale and Libeccio”. The navigator’s chart from Gastaldi’s great “pocket” atlas
The second of two modern world maps from Gastaldi’s “pocket” edition of Ptolemy’s ‘Geographia’. This is the navigator’s chart, with no interior land detail, and with the addition of coast place names and rhumb lines.

Gastaldi's rare navigational chart of the world is based upon early 16th Century portolan charts of the period. The map is rich with coastal detail, much more so than Gastaldi's other world map from his Geographia of 1548 One of the earliest obtainable world maps and one of the few which departs substantially from Munster's map of 1540.
Giacomo Gastaldi was one of the most important Italian mapmakers of the early 16th Century. His set of maps for the 1548 edition of the 'Geographia are among the earliest examples of his work, in a long and distinguished career. On the reverse side, an explanation is given in Itanlian:' about this sea chart, or the use and practice of navigation'
